The
most powerful effect in all this comes in our
prayer life. Ellul tells us that, while belief
follows God for what one can receive, faith follows
God for nothing at all, simply because he is the
Almighty. That is, we do not follow God because he
keeps us safe on this journey or that flight. No,
we follow God, knowing God is free to do what he
wants (and so are we, for we have chosen to follow
him without hope of gain), and that he is
trustworthy to do what is right. So we need not
fret about tomorrow, we need only be grateful for
today.
